Not updated plugins

    Hi
I appreciate everyone's efforts, no matter the size.

Do you know the feeling of getting lost in a desert and at last seeing someone, from distance, coming towards you. Full of hope, you reach him/her and ask the certain direction. The disappoint would be as deep as the joy of expectation, if he/she answers:
    - You can follow this path or... maybe that one or that one over there. No one can ever be certain in a desert. Time goes by and wind changes everything.

I have each time the same feeling, when I reach at this sign after a long journey of searching:

This plugin hasn't been updated in over 2 years. It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of WordPress.

    Suggestions:
    1. When displaying this sign, add another warning sign below it addressing the author(s) of the plugin:
....If you by this date..., don't confirm that the plugin is working in the new environment, your plugin will be labeled as abandoned.

2 When a plugin labeled as abandoned:
    a. Show a voting list to know how big is the interest for its update
    b. Show a wishlist for suggestions of its further development
    c. Send a request (mail) to active developer in the same genre to take over the plugin and do the update.

    Best regards
    Migo5

I second that, a quick example: I wanted to publish a plugin but the name was already reserved for one that wasn't updated for two years and which is not working anymore. I can bet users will download that one first, which is not working :)).

Have you contacted the author of that plugin and offered to take over?

No, it was a general suggestion.

    I meant deconf :)

The problem with just handing over plugins is that ... they're the work of other people. It's not really fair to them, since you can't know if hey'll come back.

We are working on a policy to handle turnover, but it's rife with disagreements. So far we tag plugins as 'not updated for 2 years...' and leave it to someone's best judgement.

Of course, some plugins aren't touched and work just fine.

You are right, I didn't contact him, is a takeover possible on the current implementation of WordPress Plugin Directory? I have to admit, I am new around here.

Just wanted to show you how some new plugins that actually work are not promoted properly because of an old plugin with an approach that won't work nowadays.

I rewritten one of my Joomla Plugins, to share it with WordPress users, because i knew there is no free alternative that actually works. I don't really care about the actual name, but the fact that users have no way to report an old broken plugin for removal is something that should be considered.

Old plugins that have not been updated in 2+ years no longer show up on our search engine. Google is google, but we don't list 'em. You have to know the URL to get there.

Takeover is possible. Asking the plugin dev to take over is the first step. If they don't get back to you in a month, email plugins at wordpress.org and we can talk. :)

It still appears on your search and was last updated on 2010-10-11. I will try to contact him, but as expected, his website doesn't work.
