Native Multilingual CMS Features, one more time

@aqwxsz The idea is under consideration, which actually means nothing :) But the Core team is aware of the problem we have, and there's some work being done to (probably) make it happen in the future, first of all - check the Taxonomy Roadmap. Additionally, making slugs non-unique is a large task which will break backwards compatibility, which isn't "WordPress-way of doing things". Permalinks, as they are currently implemented, rely on slugs, which isn't good but that's what we have to deal with.

  2. It would be really awesome feature! WordPress needs to envolve to a modernistic Content Management System with a great multilingual support in core.

  3. There are too many large sites using WordPress to even think about doing something that will break them, the updates alone must be a nightmare.

@ppvchatscript1980 There are plugins like Polylang, WPML etc that are built on top of WordPress, and they don't break anything. Adding built-in foundation / API for multilingual content without introducing breaking changes (or at least with full backward compatibility) is totally possible.

If updates are a nightmare for a project it indicates there are some huge red flags in project architecture, not WordPress. In this case, virtually anything can break the site, sooner or later.

    This is a real must.
Dealing with languages is a real pain and turnoff.
Wish WordPress would provide this "out of the box" just like Drupal does since very long ago.
    Thank you.

I agree, WPML seems to get messed up on updates and is a pain in the rear. Everything these days needs to have multi-language support, I think we'll see a better plugin before we see this implemented into WP.

There are two different types of 'multilang' issues here.

    1) Front end. If your website needs to support users in multiple languages.

    2) Back end. Users who edit the site need multiple languages.

The latter is being worked on, with per-user language settings.

The former is ... well it's hard. Some people want automated translations. Some need fully separate sites for this. The options make it very difficult to find the ONE right way :(

So this is not that the core team doesn't care, it's that it's a HUGE issue.

On https://wordpress.org/about/roadmap/, we can read: "After the 2.1 release, we decided to adopt a regular release schedule every 3-4 months with the features primarily driven by ideas voted on by our users."

On https://wordpress.org/ideas/, we can read: "The highest rated ideas will be included in a future version, so if you have an idea let us know here."

This topic is 3 years old and has the highest rated (97 votes), and we are still waiting???

And this second topic https://wordpress.org/ideas/topic/add-folder-management-in-media-library ? 83 votes.

Seriously WordPress, stays in your stone age. You are so outdated. There is now better CMS with native multilingual and native folder management for the Media Library. So, so, SO outdated...

The idea is not bad. Hope this will be working out in the future.
