Ideas

more robust categories ordering and display

This is a repeat of a previous request, but being able to order categories would be so useful. We use categories as part of the taxonomy navigation aid for our posts in menus, so to be able to control them better would be invaluable.

Some may say that this is plugin territory (and indeed My Category Order can do it), but this should actually be in the core as part of a generalized drag and drop ordering solution, to be used also for Pages and Posts. It is quite unbelievable that after so many years, WP is still doing the nerdviewy sorting by integers.

    Agree!

  4. I agree to this! I think the categorie section is something which has much potential for more functions. To order the categories is just one of them.

  5. Currently I'm building up my website with WP and I've to aggree to this, it's annoying that there are no really categorie functions. For every simple function which could be core I need a different plugin. At the end I've 5 plugins only for some categorie functions...

I agree, every time I have to use a plugin for something that should be in the core I feel like I am adding some kind of bloatware. Lately I have just been altering the actual WordPress code and am hoping to have everything altered soon so I have my own copy with everything built in and NO plugins for basic functions. So far I have managed to create a very nice anti-spam system directly into the code as well as custom emails and some odds and ends features that probably just pertain to my own needs. for any of the BIG stuff it's plugins as my knowledge is still limited.

This is a many years ago idea (Ninestein post's was written 5 years ago) but the "problem" is present. I agree too.
I invite more people to vote, it's important.

You don't need to vote :) There are two things at play here.

    1) The whole taxonomy system has been getting a power up with term meta data

    2) Without term meta data, there are only two ways to sort (alphabetical or order of being added) because that's all we track.

Once term meta is in core fully, you'll be able to add new ways to sort your terms. Yay!

    THAT SAID.

We use categories as part of the taxonomy navigation aid for our posts in menus, so to be able to control them better would be invaluable.

You can do that already, manually ordering your menu items. So we actually did it :D

We also have to use a plugin to get the categories in the right order. Installed the second plugin now to make it work.

Especially in automated generated menus for the users a logical sorting is needed. Thats not done by alphabet, slug or id.

I really would appreciate if wordpress would offer here some more options in future as ipstenu has written, cause installing a new plugin for every little change doesn't feel good as some users wrote before. Also the wp-admin gets more and more confusing and unclear with every added plugin. I think we are already arround 25 plugins now.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but installing plugins to get the options is exactly what WordPress is about.

Decisions, not options. So ... You will always need to use a plugin when you're doing things in a 'logical' way like you've described. Because, surprise, your logical way that is not alphabetical, slug, or by ID, is not logical to anyone else but you :/ Computers cannot automate what you 'mean' only what they can know.

So you have to teach them your order and then they know.
