If the whole point of a user-friendly theme is to be user-friendly, why is it NOT EASY to change the dimensions of the image displayed in the header? Would you expect the average new user to know how or be willing to figure out how to tinker with template code or create a child theme simply to accomplish this? Two simple text area boxes, one for height, one for width, placed in the template preferences along with header upload image would do this trick nicely. The image could either be cropped or resized, that's up to WP to decide.

  3. You may want to have a look at any of the following plugins which seem to already do what you are requesting:

    Resize Twenty Eleven Header

Twenty Eleven Theme Extension - let's you only change the height of the image header

More and more themes are starting to use the function custom header image...Do the 2011 theme extensions work for all themes?

I am thinking there should be an easy way to resolve this by adding addition custom header image sizes in the functions file, much like you add featured image/post thumbnail sizes.

Reading this though I don't see any instructions for doing it...

  5. No, the 2011 theme extensions do not work for all themes, though in theory the methodology can be applied to any that uses similar functions.
