Make images uploaded or internal links protocol-relative

One downfall I noticed with WordPress is that when you upload an image or use the WP tool to link internally, the links come out in full. The issue is this, is when SSL is enabled, the images do not automatically update leading to unencrypted content (and thus a warning).

    I propose:
Protocol-relative URLs - format URL output to be // rather than https:// or http://.

  2. It's a bit of a bigger change than all that, and even if WP did it, it wouldn't change your existing posts :/

In general, since you can only have one URL at a time, we suggest you do a search/replace after you change to https and fix all your links.

I know it's not a small fix. It would be a core overhaul. That's why I made the post here. That said, future-forward it would be a great benefit to those who add SSL later on as a feature-set (i.e. shopping cart, memberships, etc) and most especially when the site is note wholly SSL-secured.

I had this problem with the wrong image-urls after setup to https a few weeks before. It was very hard to update all this urlĀ“s manually.

I have no idea how much work this would be but it would be so nice to get this function implemented.

  5. I did some spot checking and apparently it's not universally supported in browsers yet AND it could mess up 3rd party tools (like... Facebook ;) )

http://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/174228/remove-the-http-protocol-from-images seems the best approach right now.
