Keep it simple!, WP as just a framework!

Theres some great ideas in here but I believe mnay of them would just bloat the app. WP is great because of its simplicity! and its simple because its a framework!

While I appreciate the sentiment, I fear that train has left the station. WP is useful for folks who want to concentrate on content as opposed to building systems, and is already much more than a "framework."

Obviously there needs to be a balance of
o Complexity of code and ability of the community to maintain it
    o Features that add value
and I'm sure everyone would draw the line in a slightly different place.

Perhaps the answer's partly in tools that make plugin discovery, installation and upgrades easier -- but talk about "herding cats"...

Thanks to the entire team! As an admin trying to support a half-dozen different groups with WP sites, I've been mightily impressed with the decisions you've made and the robustness of the code!

Big vote for this idea. With the fast development lately - even though there is some great stuff in it - I have a gut feeling the train has indeed left the station and is moving very fast. Maybe too fast, out of control?

I would say: concentrate on a very stable, safe (how many security issues have there been lately?) core application. Plugins already do a very good job of allowing Wp to be extended. Please don't add more features in the main system itself and with that messing everything up!

Look at Microsofts software, like Word. All bloat. Thousands and thousands of features. Sure, great if you need it. But in 99% of the time it only distracts or stands in the way of the most important things.

I'd think it would be interesting to see two versions: a WP Framework version, and a WP Full Size version. Right now, WP is light enough for me, and I'm not a programmer, even if I can make some simple PHP hacks. I don't want to have tools to build an engine, I want it running out of the box. WP is already much better than its large competitors (Blogger and Movable Type), and being GPLed anyone can take the code and remove the bloat. Two versions make more sense than one to me.

Heres my vote for two versions - I'd love a 'slimmed down' framework to use as a CMS, as many people do with WordPress.

At this point, WordPress is enirely centered around blogging. If you want some more functionality, we have the plugin framework. But to transform WordPress into something like Joomla is a bit strange.

If you are looking fo a framework in the first place, and then want some blogging tools, there is a component for Joomla that integrates WordPress. I'm not sure what it's called, but the Developer section of the Joomla site uses it.

I totally agree that the code should first of all be stable and that it should be easy and "foolproof" to install a base system.
What's the use of great functions if it becomes more and more difficult to get ANYTHING working in the first place.
Please focus on fixing bugs and improving the documentation before adding anything new. Please, no more Microsoft syndrome.
