Agree on this. Been relying on 3rd party plugins with not-so-good integration.
This is a very special case. I think 99.9% of all wordpress users dont link to external sites from the menu. Than no nofollow links are not needed. Plugins will do the work. Or just manipulate the link with 1 line of javascript, google does parse js.
You can put nofollow in a menu link by clicking on options when you are in the configuration of the menu. You have to check the "relation of the owner of the site (XFN)".
Now you can put the nofollow attribute in the new case. You just have to write "nofollow" and nothing else.
There is the same solution for the target with "target of the link" in the options configuration.

Not those links, they mean in the Appearance -> Menu section. The old links section actually doesn't exist on new WordPress installs.
