Improving WP Mobile Indexing, Rendering and Website Security

Google just announced that effective April 21 they will downgrade in their Mobile Search results any Websites that do not meet their expectations for mobile-friendliness. You can read the full announcement here:

    http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2015/02/finding-more-mobile-friendly-search.html

So far I have found one issue that could be potentially far-reaching for the WordPress community. I don't even know where to report this much less how to fix it.

The issue depends on who uses "robots.txt" to keep crawlers out of the "wp-content" directory. Many people (including me) only allow crawlers into the "wp-content/uploads/" folder to prevent potential hackers from seeing which themes and plugins are installed on our Websites.

Now Google has made mobile-compatibility a requirement in Mobile Search (Web search is unaffected for desktop/laptop users). They need to access all the CSS and Javascript files that are placed in the "wp-content" folder for active themes and plugins in order to virtually render each page on a website correctly.

While testing their Mobile Friendly Tool (https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/) on two sites that used the same theme and the Jetpack plugin's mobile theme (which is one of Google's suggestions), I found that one site passed the test and the other site did not.

After tugging on Google's sleeve I received confirmation from them that the problem was most likely due to my use of featured images on the failing site. By allowing their crawler into the "wp-content" directory I was able to resolve the problem.

Of course, most people are not even going to know about this. They may or may not use plugins or some other standard "robots.txt" code they pick up elsewhere that blocks "wp-content" for them.

Without being able to see how the images are managed by Javascript and/or CSS the Mobile Friendly tool simply assumes they are being shown full-sized to mobile users, and this can trigger a "content too wide for screen" error.

I know that WordPress ships with empty "index.php" files in folders, but theme and plugin authors would have to update their "index.php" files if a convention of serving a "noindex" robots meta tag in those pages were adopted. If the theme and plugin directories are noindexed then the search engines can still find the rendering files they need without reporting to potential hackers which themes and plugins are installed on Websites.

Noindexing is actually a better solution than blocking with "robots.txt" anyway because if the search engines find links pointing to those plugins and themes they will still report their presence, even while warning that they cannot report on the contents of the directories. Ironically, you can see the contents of the directories by looking at the cache images the search engines show you. Noindexing would fix that.

Another mobile issue that may still prevent some WordPress sites from passing the rendering tests is the size of "raw" images. It might be helpful if WordPress began adopting the PICTURE element (http://html5hub.com/html5-picture-element/) which wraps around the IMG element and provides alternative image files for different display environments. Since WordPress has the ability to generate thumbnails of various sizes, I think this might be a good mobile feature.

Come April 21 I doubt most people whose Websites lose visibility in Google Mobile Search will even know what happened. If they track search referral traffic at all they may see a sudden dropoff with no explanation.

Google is attempting to notify Website owners who set up Google Webmaster Tools accounts but they will only reach a fraction of self-hosted WordPress users, in my opinion.

According to industry estimates, mobile search referrals have already begun outpacing desktop search referrals in many sectors.

WordPress, by default, doesn't block wp-content. That means in as far as WordPress CORE software is concerned, this is outside anything we can do. Since the ideas forums is for core WP ideas, this is a 'plugin territory' cause and solution :/

No, it's not "plugin territory". It's a security issue for WordPress to leave the Wp-content directory open to search engine INDEXING (crawling is fine).

The reason why people block the "wp-content" directory is to make it harder for hackers to determine which potentially vulnerable plugins are installed on a site.

Rather than block crawlers via "robots.txt" WP site owners would be better off if WordPress CORE made sure that its folders are using "NOINDEX".

Plugin requirements can be tightened by not listing plugins that don't NOINDEX themselves.

It's just one script per folder (index.php) that right now serves no useful purpose.

The reason why people block the "wp-content" directory is to make it harder for hackers to determine which potentially vulnerable plugins are installed on a site.

Hackers don't 'scan' your wp-content folder to find things to hack.

Hackers assume 'domain.com/wp-content/plugins/vulnerableplugin/filename.php' and hit it directly.

So while you may feel you're making your site safer, hackers? Do not care.

I work for a webhost. I see the hits they make ALL the time. They are rarely scanning directories in this day and age. They use botnets to hammer.

"Hackers don't 'scan' your wp-content folder to find things to hack."

No, they use GOOGLE to find vulnerable directories. I don't care who you work for, you obviously are not as informed about how hackers find vulnerabilities as you think you are.

So while you may feel this is trivial and unimportant, it's not.

I think we're talking about different groups of hackers.

The people who script attacks, and subject our networks to ddos floods that crash servers and swamp your processes while poking for a vulnerability is not the same as someone who's trying to hurt you, specifically. Neither are the same as the small group of people who do google to see who to target... But even so, they're not googling to see who has plugin X, they're looking for WP if they bother with that at all. Drupal exploits hit every URL people can find too, using it or not.

And not even security, you'll hurt your SEO: https://yoast.com/wordpress-robots-txt-example/

If you want to do this RIGHT for security, turn off indexing.

    Options -Indexes

    Done :)

Edited to point out: WP can't magically slap an index.php in every plugin folder, nor should it, and since not everyone's on Apache, it can't put that no-index into .htaccess for people. Which is really what the fix here is, not messing with robots.txt

    EDIT: I'm wrong, you're right.

I should have thought of using options -indexes.

I just tested this with Google's Mobile Friendly Test and the site passed.

    We can close this out.

    All good :D

(Sadly, I wish we COULD just have WP slap no-index for everyone, but we have enough trouble supporting IIS as it is. Grrrr. IIS. 😡 )

It's a world filled with compromise. Sometimes you just have to beat the best compromise into my stubborn head.

I'm not asking that this issue be re-opened but here is a recent example of a bot problem the wp-content directory. What follows is from a raw server log I just checked after a site was locked up by rogue crawler activity. Once the wp-content directory is indexed in search engines, hackers use Bing and Google to look for sites using WordPress. They then add the sites to a queue that their bots crawl. This one is coming from a data center in Texas, and is maybe a compromised Web server. These plugins do not actually exist on the server. The bot was just looking for them. I have to deal with this kind of stuff all the time.
