Improving the media structure

    Hi

I would like to see a better media structure.

    - Being able to rename the uploads folder to media or other name.
    - Drag a folder with images onto the upload images dialog box. Having the folder added to the uploads/media folder.
    - Seeing a folder inside the Media library list.
    - Creating folders and tags inside the media library.
    - Having only one copy of each image.
    - Setting different sizes through an improved Settings -> Media section. One image just used in different sizes.
    - Max size of image OR resizing to max image size.
    - Being able to bulk or quick edit download of media.
    ..... what else?

Do please add to this list.

  2. They all sound like nice changes.

    - Also progressive JPG support for iPods and iPhones.

This would be fantastic. I was hoping for something like this in WP 4.0. One folder with hundreds of files is not easily managed without subfolders by type or self-sorted. Month uploaded folders are not very helpful.

I love the status: "Duplicate of another idea". Yes, this is a common complaint I hear about WP, but it still hasn't reached critical mass yet.

Ultimately many people choose to upload files by FTP. This bypasses upload issues and restrictions placed on files through either WordPress or through third party caching sites (ie. cloudflare) and allows custom folders and personalized file organization. Unfortunately this means that those files are not available through the WordPress system. I think some of these ideas could be resolved if there was a way to point the media library to a folder to be scanned and have the files added into the database tables. I've seen some plug-ins attempt to do this but they either don't work very well or If the plug-in gets disabled those files and the system go disappear.

I think the media library really is the worst part of WordPress right now, for most users.

I manage about 25 sites on an ongoing basis. Half of the clients I work with have difficulty navigating the media library. About once or twice every quarter, I speak with a prospective client who wants to modify the way images are handled. Typically this involves requests for media folders, much in the same was as they were requested in this thread.

Personally, I think it would be ideal if WordPress gave you the ability to add both tags and categories (instead of folders) to media. Obviously the media files live on ftp, not directly in the database, but it would seem that tag/category metadata about images could be stored in the database itself, without requiring massive retooling of the database.

Either way, more than half of the websites I manage have more than 1000 media uploads. Four of them have 5000+. It really is very challenging to navigate even a few hundred images in the media library on WordPress. I hope we can add media file metadata soon, and roll that into the core of WordPress.

Definitely need tags and categories for media uploads, making them more similar in function to custom post types.

I manage sites for clients that could definitely use this functionality. There are no good workarounds.

Agreed! Not being able to organise all the files in the media library into sub-folders has been one of my biggest annoyances with WordPress for some time.

I can't believe we're at version 4.0, and it still can't be done!

I know that implementing some features can be a real pain. I was thinking that if you were to offer sub-folders for media that were more customizable then I had an idea of how it might look. (implementation being an entirely different animal)
Right now you can select a pull down menu to filter out images and audio. Create a second pull down menu next to it that is populated with the sub-folders of the download directory. I think there might even be a WordPress function that will output that info. Now you can filter by directory. Next we would just need to add in a process to create directories and another one to scan them and import content into the word press database. Right now I can write a php script that will scan a folder and turn all the files into links. There is already a process that WordPress goes through when you upload files, it doesn't seem like it could be too terribly hard to create some kind of file scanner. This could even be used to verify files. Like if some moron decided to use ftp to delete a bunch of old files but now they are still showing up in the media area. lol.
I have seen a bunch of plugins that attempt to replicate something similar to this but with limited success. Having this as part of the WordPress core would be very useful.
Let's be honest. WordPress isn't just a CMS for blogging, it's turned into a viable solution for full on websites so maybe we should start thinking of it that way instead of just as a simple blogging platform.

  9. Also the ability to link gallery images to a custom URL without an extra plugin. ;)
