Improved Management for Large (Nested) Menus

When using WP as a CMS having 40+ pages with nested menus, the UI for managing them under Appearance > Menus is very cumbersome, enough so that the "old" method of using wp_page_menu and managing parents/children is actually easier.

Issue: When adding a new page, it appears at the bottom of the drag-n-drop list, and must be dragged up to where you want it, while scrolling through a very long list of menu and sub-menu items (and sub-sub-menu, etc).

Proposed Solution: Make each menu collapsable so that all of its child items can be hidden to shorten your list, and shown only when particular sub-menus are being worked on.

    There's a plugin for that.

Just tried this plugin to be sure, but it doesn't affect the menu interface under Appearance > Menus. It only affects the page listings by displaying a portion of the total list, with each click triggering another page load rather than using a jquery effect to show/hide, accordion-style.

There actually is a plugin that purports to do what I'm suggesting, but it didn't work for me when I tried working with it.

More importantly, I'd suggest this should be in core, since it's an important part of the UI for a full CMS.

What happened to this? This problem is very frustrating if you are working with nested menus.

For example if you have 300+ product categories in an ecommerce site and you want to have nested menus - you can do it but working in Appearances -> Menus to achieve it is a nightmare.

There is a thread with a purported filter to fix it but doesn't work as far as I can see.

The link above doesn't really address this problem and in any event it hasn't made it into the core of WordPress at v 3.9.

It's been harder to code than thought, since large menus overrun the memory buffer. Have to solve that before we can go forward.

Agree with comments above, would be so great if it could be collapsible

I found one. This is for the rest of you people who are searching for expandable / collapsible menus: Expandable Menus - https://wordpress.org/plugins/expandable-menus/

I installed it the other day and boy, it's been very convenient and a time-saver! I just double-click next to the menu (nest too) to expand or collapse it. Hope this is what you are looking for. Be well.
