A wiki-editable history of the WordPress project featuring well-written encyclopedia-style articles on all the releases, personalities, and the project's ups and downs. There'd be praise. There'd be slagging. There'd need to be citations. And it would have to be open for any WordPress-nerd to write on. It could be a total disaster—but it could also be amazing.

Who else would want to see this happen on the official site? Who's with me?

I think this is a great project idea. I think it would be very interesting, informative and helpful.

Should be interesting, as in, "May you live in interesting times."

I like this idea a lot. I can see some of both sides of the debate that started this, but a community history projects could be cool, especially if it could be tied into the wordpress.org profiles.

There's already a wiki for this:

The problem with wikipedia is this: most of the personalities and events involved in the WordPress world are too minor for wikipedia. That's why a wiki entirely devoted to WordPress history is needed.

I think we have more pressing needs, like better documentation, improving the newbie experience, making it easier/more welcoming for new contributors, etc. As a historian (though I'm a UX person by trade, my education is in history), wikis+history make me nervous, b/c if I have one pet peeve, it's inaccurate information being called history, which abounds in wikis. If it's going to be called "official," then I think some level of curation would be needed to ensure accuracy. That said, there's been talk of changing WP Planet to be a more active and inclusive resource, which could maybe address the need you're citing?

Curation would more than likely be needed. But some level of freedom would still be needed too. Anyway, a place for community-powered history could fit in a revamped planet. Sure.

As far as need goes, I think a more complete, and living, history document would go a long way towards equalizing the nerds and the noobs and the ins and the outs. I think it's 'insider' knowledge of the project that's the real barrier to community involvement from the 9.999 million other WordPress users out there.

Thanks for taking a look at this idea, Jane!
