Groups (user management)

WordPress only allows one person to own a post or page while at the same time allowing anyone with sufficient privileges (e.g. editors) to edit it. By having groups, content can be restricted to only the owner(s) of a page, increasing security and easing management, so that even those with the same role couldn't edit the content by default. When used as a CMS, it's integral to be able to prevent one user from editing another user's content, and by creating groups, teams can be assigned ownership without giving access to everyone automatically. For example, Alice and Bob are editors, so Bob can come along and change Alice's page at will. However with group management, everyone by default can't edit Alice's content unless she is in a group with those users, and the page is "owned" by that group.
