Feature Request: Two-Factor Authentication

in spite of the growing acceptance of a two-step authentication process, I would suggest that native support/integration for 2FA should be added to the wordpress core.

I know that this can be added through the usage of a plugin, however, I think it would substantially add to the security of wordpress sites. Many users are not aware of the possibilities, therefore wordpress should ship it natively. It would also help people to conquer plugin inconsistencies and the overall brute-force attacks would not harm that many people.

This seems like a good idea.

  3. iThemes Security Plugin on the way.
And also many features for protecting our WordPress Website.

Maybe the plugin just enough, not in core.

The problem of iThemes Security is that they require the premium version for 2FA, which is kind of expensive just to add such a „basic“ feature. My guess is, that most WordPress siteowners try to get around with free plugins. This kind of security shouldn‘t be a paid extra.

The feature core plugin is here - https://wordpress.org/plugins/two-factor/

    It's free and it works.

The solution itself is fraught with support issues, though. For example, if you lose your 2fa key ... who unlocks you?

It would be really nice! Users of WordPress need to be diligent about security because they are using CMS that is popular enough to be of interest to hackers.
Brute Force attacks can still be a problem.

I also wish more security features would be native in wordpress, instead of using a ton of different plugins, that are eventually slowing down the backend and the page itself.
