Extend Widgets

  1. Inactive

Currently widgets are global - unless plugins are custom code is written.

Why not extend widgets a bit?

We can keep the widgets as they exist today as "global" widgets.

Then we can create a widget editor area on the page/post editor. Then, based on the template layout selected, the appropriate widget areas would be expanded to allow for widget addition/editing.

For instance, if my site uses full-screen as a default view. but I choose sidebar-content, a sidebar widget area would be displayed in the below the content editor and allow for widgets to be added to the specific page/post that would be relative to the specific page/post.

This would allow clients easier access to widgets that are "page specific"

This may also be extended to CPT's, category pages, etc.

The goal is to keep page specific widgets easily locatable/editable by the client within one interface.

  2. The problem there is it's highly theme/plugin dependent. Too many options. Some themes can do this out of the box, others will require plugins to tweak.
