Easier way to find WPMU themes, plugins, etc.

For all plugins and themes or whatevers, why not have a simple button that says "WPMU-certified" or "WPMU-compatible" so that we don't have to dig and dig and dig for it to see if it will work on WPMU? You will continue to have issues with usability until you either merge it all so that they are 100% compatible (unlikely) or you clearly label all things to be either one-type or both-types.

developers are supposed to tag themes and plugins with wpmu (or really multisite these days)

That said - just because something isn't tagged, doesn't mean it won't work.

Most themes work fine on MultiSite if they're coded well (and realistically, all themes in the repo should). Plugins are always going to be hit and miss, same as on single site. Rule of thumb: Assume it'll work if activated per site (i.e. NOT network wide) unless it says otherwise. If it fails, report it to the dev.

Theme developers don't have the option of tagging their theme as multisite compatible.

Nevertheless, all themes should work on multisite since the themes now undergo a strict review process before being allowed on the themes repository.
