Ideas

Easier Updates

I'm still using WP 1.5 because of the extreme complexity of the upgrade process and the equally extreme risk of losing older blog materials in the process. My idea is to create a WP system that would account for easy upgrades.

I fully agree. An auto-update system would be great too.

What is it about upgrading from 1.5 that you think is complex, and what do you think you are in danger of losing?

If you have made modifications to core WP files, you can almost certainly duplicate that work in a newer version as a plugin and/or a theme. Once you've converted that work to a proper plugin or theme, you'll never have to worry about losing it in an upgrade.

Upgrading from 1.5 to 2.0 was a total mess for me... mostly because of the reliance on plugins for extensible functionality... but there were other problems too: I lost auto-enclosures and my permalinks were broken for a week as I sorted out what went wrong.

The trouble is, what makes you think and auto update would fix that... all that would be improved is the ease and speed of "mucking up your blog"

Any auto process will be just that, an automated file updater, it will most likely not automatically merge all your core changes, and fix plugins.

Beukeboom: I'm interested in where you think the "extreme complexity" and "extreme risk" of updating WordPress is. If you post to the WordPress forums with your concerns about upgrading, I'm positive there will be plenty of people willing to help you out.

As for your suggestion, it's a good one in the wider scope of things, but Dickie is right. An auto-update would just break your site in 0.05 seconds instead of the 2 minutes it takes you to break it yourself.

Also, on an unrelated note, I'm interested to know why your WP installation is in your cgi-bin.
