Delete your own profile capability
It would be very useful if WP added a capability to allow the user to delete its own profile (sort of like an unsuscribe feature). This capability would be available at the lowest user as well level (suscriber).
This idea was discussed in this forum thread. Even though I understand the security issues such a capability might pose, I also believe that it could come in handy for WP users and blogers out there.
Other than that, I have to say one more thing: Thank you WP for such a wonderful platform!
I don't see any real reason to have this in core and don't think its a good way for a developer to spend their time on when its pretty much useless for almost all users of WP. You can get an admin to delete your account if you want.
This could probably be achieved with a plugin, if anyone tries and it doesn't work then they should get a hook added or something so that it does.
Ditto on everything Jeremy has already said.
Am I not right in thinking that the User Roles & Capabilities are going to get a look at in 3.1 anyway, it's been talked about a bit, on numerous blogs and in Trac (#10201)! Never know if something like this might be implemented? :)
I don't know how "almost all users" are actually using WP. I participate and try to help out in the Forums as much as I can, and I have personally read dozens of threads and posts where people claim they use WP to manage portals, subscription sites, etc., so I think that allowing their users to delete their own profiles might be useful. Also, don't forget that WP is a platform that is meant and designed with flexibility and usability in mind, and I think that this feature might add some value in that sense.
As for the time it would take to develop such a feature, even though I am not a developer nor a programmer, I know a little about how WP works, and I really don't think that adding a new capability would take up that much time anyway, specially if roles and capabilities seem to be targeted already, as Mark pointed out.
Roles are going to get looked at in the future, but having a user self-deletion system built-in seems contrary to the the idea of the admin being the 'owner' of the site. For example, if an author gets into a tizzy and decides to delete him/herself and all their posts disappeared, it could adversely affect a site. I think this is probably plugin territory, and thus up to each admin to decide if they want to allow.
Ask and you shall receive:
We just created the plugin today. :)
