Copy / make a duplicate of exisiting pages or posts

I many times make some great pages and need almost the exact page except for the title and the little bit of content. I would like to be able to copy and paste / make a duplicate of existing page so that I didn't have to recreate everything on it anytime I wanted to make a new page.

There are a number of plugins that do this. I would consider this niche functionality, better suited to a plugin than core.

    This is my plugin:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/duplicate-post/

Although I'm expanding it with some features (mainly as options), I think that the "nucleus" of it could be added to the core of WP easily, without spoiling the UI as it adds only a couple of links and functions (then my plugin would add options to the basic feature, as many others plugin do to other WP features).

Since WP is evolving towards a full CMS, I think it would make sense.
Maybe someday I'll try to edit the trunk code and submit the diffs for consideration...

This should be in the core :(

    It's very basic functionality

Unbelievable that this isn't in the core - I would say this illustrates that WordPress isn't (and never was!) a true content management system, it is a blogging platform that people now (wrongly!) use for day-to-day website management, when it is clearly not cut out for this at all!

If your company has an 'information only' website with news to share and nothing else then GREAT! But try putting the wretched commerce plugins and you will be in a world of pain as a developer

Guess I'm just ranting now, working with a company (who insists on using WordPress!) where a page copy feature would save me several hours of pain trying to figure out why the idiots that built this thing made such a dogs breakfast of the edit features!

7 years ago, I began using WordPress and thought it was great, I see now that it doesn't really have a place on the modern web - it's basically 90's technology written in PHP which isn't even a real development language, running on free, open source Linux GNU licences spotty-faced university-geek material operating system.

This is not a platform you want running on the servers of a big global multinational company, and we need to be clear about this!

This is not "niche functionality" and should not be left as "plugin territory." It is very frequently the case that you want to create a new page by starting with an existing page, copying it, and then making some changes. Anyone who uses WordPress to manage a company web site will be in this situation constantly. Every other CMS, editing product, and OS I know of includes "Make a Copy" or "Duplicate Page" or "Save As ..." or something similar that lets you copy what you have so you can make changes in a new instance. WordPress should include this in the Core.

Absolutely agree that this should be in the core and its baffling that its not. This is SO simple to code, has virtually no overhead apart from when its actually run and could be added to the 'Bulk Actions' drop down to no layout work is needed.

I'm baffled by this - all CMS' I've developed over the years all had this baked-in and they were developed by one person.

  9. Was just searching for this. I can't believe this isn't a feature yet, insane. I also can't believe I haven't needed to use this until now. Guess a plugin will have to do.

It would also be nice to have a duplicate elements option. Certain plugins that attempt to give WordPress a drag and drop interface use this approach (such as Thrive Content Builder). While such plugins are far from perfect, at least they recognize the labor-saving benefits of copy and paste! WP should, too!!!

I agree that duplicating a page should be core functionality... I mean, hel-lo!
