Change or customize admin panel options

  1. Xander

The admin panel options are not optimized for regular usage. For example, Presentation takes up a load of space and you typically only use this any time you make a major change to the theme of your site. Likewise, Import strikes me as something you are most likely to use right off the bat, after which it is just wasting space.

The idea: "startup mode" and a more "regular mode" for admin panels. Make it an admin option to bury the stuff that you aren't going to use much after the blog has been setup. Bring out the stuff that you will be using more often--the steak and potatoes of admin actions. Put the Comments/Awaiting Moderation tabs on the main bar so it is more accessible. Or better yet, make the whole thing easily customizable from the ground up for admins seeking to streamline their back end activities.

I agree with Xander that more customization of the admin panels would be great. Here, for what it's worth, is how I've dealt with that issue for my sites:

I also use the semiologic admin menu plugin which, once I'm logged in, gives me a one-line shortcut menu across the top of all my web pages. That lets me go quickly to the sections of the admin side that I need. Denis de Bernardy was kind enough to help me update the plugin for my site so that subscribers don't see the menu, but authors and administrators do. I have not talked with de Bernardy about a further update/hack I'd like, which is to remove some of the buttons on that menu and add others (for instance, remove the Dashboard and add Polls and Reports, two panels for plugins that I use frequently).

I use the admin menu for all of my sites, but http://www.thenovelette.com/ is the site where I'm getting the most leverage out of it.

I also suggest going to http://www.semiologic.com/ and checking out the admin menu, it's been really convenient for me; I've only used de Bernardy's free plugins so far, but I like them all.

Startup mode and regular mode - great idea. Thumbs up.
