Yeah this would be handled better. Not used advanced media yet but could wordpress look at look at what plugins area popular with wordpress users. And then look at working with pluging creators to have them intergrated. But making sure there always on board with the plugin.

Media categories should definitely be part of the core, in my opinion. Right now I'm using http://wordpressuxsolutions.com/plugins/enhanced-media-library/ which uses the standard WordPress tables for taxonomies etc and it's very well integrated. But they'll charge a licence fee for the full version with bulk actions. It's basically treating the media "posts" as regular posts (that of course can be categorised), so there's no rocket science going on...

So .... That domain is violating the WordPress foundation trademark (you can't have 'wordpress' in your domain name any more than you can have google). I pinged them about it.

But that is kinda cool code.

Oops. They'd better buy wpuxsolutions.com (for example) quick!

The more one thinks about it, it's really surprising how WordPress has gotten to this level of maturity WITHOUT media categories. Or does everyone use gallery plugins anyway? I try going by the KISS principle and the stock media gallery will get improved...right?

  6. Thanks for it. I use it in my wordpress installation and it works fine. It slows down the Load time a little bit, but it is ok.

The title of this topic is misleading in my eyes. Part of the ability of categorizing media should be allowing to reorder the media inside those categories.
That is, using menu_order (like in pages). There are very few media categorizing plugins that also support menu_order.
Literally none of them provide an easy way to do so.

Categories are really important to organize your images. I am lost when i am searching for older images. Also something like a folder structure would be nice.

Thank you for the good idea; I use a plugin. Part of core would be much better.
