Just because something can be done with plugins doesn't mean it should, does it? I see the media library as very much a core feature, one that is used by just about every WordPress user at some point. Surely making it work well isn't just a niche requirement to be added on by those who want it... it's something WordPress should do for everyone, isn't it?

Well actually ... yes. If something can be done via a plugin, and it is done well, the usage of the plugin will be what demonstrates to the core devs and leads if the feature should be in core or not.

In this particular case, the lack of a 'silver bullet' plugin illustrates the problem of how many different methods and ways there are to solve this problem, and that there is not one way the majority prefers.

As hard as that may be to believe, that logic is how we got Menus in core, as well as Custom Post Types, the new design of the back end of core, and more.

Making it work well is not a niche requirement, but that doesn't mean it's automatically a majority one either. Right now it's middle-of-the-road. Eventually it will reach breaking point, or someone will make the plugin that does it 'right' and then we can move forward.

Until then, please use plugins, leave reviews on them, and help us use plugins to make core better.

Custom taxonomies for attachments (media) is a good start. Now we just need built-in support for filtering media using those taxonomies. Both in the regular list of media and when inserting/uploading/selecting media into a post.
