My clients tell me that the inability to organise the media gallery efficiently, e.g. by giving media tags and/or categories, is one of WordPress's biggest weaknesses. Two thumbs up for this idea. :)

    Hello,

What do you think about using this plugin to sort your files.

Zefta, thanks for the suggestion. I'm sure that plugin could be useful in some implementations, but it doesn't meet my needs for two reasons:

    1) Using folders means that each image can be in only one folder (or category) so it's not possible to tag with multiple attributes.

    2) Not sure what happens if you disable the plugin. Can WordPress still find images in the sub-folders? What happens when the plugin is no longer supported? I'd rather have an implementation that better matches the WordPress core architecture.

I can't answer to number 1 but for number 2 if you disabled the plugin there is no problems with links because path of medias are stored in database.

I agree that better organization of media files is needed. How to accomplish that in a way that supports the broad scope of wordpress core is up to debate. Surely there is a solution that creates organizational flexibility, without being too customized or niche.

taxonomies for media gallery would be great - some of my websites are 5 years old, I am dying by maintaining hundrets of pics and videos within the media galery

Organizing media for us has always been an issue, it's just one of those things we have come to live with... If there was a system that worked well for categorizing media would be an WOW factor at this point.
