Automatic backups of theme files through WordPress

I like to modify theme files through WordPress so as to see instant results, rather than modifying them with an editor on my computer, then having to upload them to my server.

I would love to see a feature where wordpress doesn't simply re-write updated theme files, for instance, but also allows you to backup X number of versions of Sidebar.php, Style.css, Header.php, et cetera.

This would help developers avoid time consuming frustrations when something goes wrong in modifying a file. Plus we can all rest assured that our most recent work is backed up.

Comes too close to a built-in theme editor for me; I think that would be a resource-hogging thing to be avoided at all costs.

Or, you could just copy your theme, then edit it there and if you want to go back just select the original one.

Personally I prefer to keep a local server for testing my themes instead of doing it live.
