    An inbuilt template tag to determine whether the commentor is the author of the post.

    Maybe you should pick out a better theme or find a plugin for this.

    The tags are there. All you'll ever need is this bit of code to manually do it:

    <?php if($comment->comment_author_email == get_the_author_email()) echo ' author'; ?>

    I think whether someone is good at PHP or not is irrelevant here. The idea is for a template tag (PHP function) for this, which would still have to be added in the mix of a whole lot of other PHP within the comments.php file.

    This would still fall on the shoulders of theme authors to add. Pretty much any theme author should know his or her way around PHP enough to add that line.

    I think what we really need to be asking for is that theme authors start adding this as a standard in their themes, maybe even as a standard in the Default Theme so theme authors building off that will see how it works.

    Plenty of new comment classes now included in WP (since at least 2.9) so all you need is some CSS-fu.
