The Atom API is a new REST-based API:
We should support all of the Atom API we can, because a new generation of clients, such as Nokia cell phones, OS X, and desktop clients have exclusive support for it and not XML-RPC.

Indeed! It would be wonderful to be able to manage WP through APP (Atom Publishing Protocol).
Can I point out that on all the devices you mentioned, a web browser is avaiable which will get the job done better and quicker than any desktop client, regardless of its API?
This still needs to work, as the AtomPUB interface is nowhere near as full-featured as the XML-RPC one or the WP Admin Interface. In order for the job to be done better and quicker than the browser-based administration interface, the API needs to reach feature parity with it.
We should start porting all the XMLRPC features to AtomPUB, starting with Comment Submission and Moderation.
Great idea. To reach the most readers you need to embrace as many options as possible.
This is implemented, and new pieces are added as applicable.
