Currently wordpress does not allow to add external link to menu Item. This is required particularly in network install to give a link to mainblog or to any other site. Menu link home point always to respective blog but there is no way to point a link to main site.

This is a feature available in joomla for long time.

I have implemented this on http://apnibaat.org/features/ where this sub blog point to main site apnibaat.org using plugin "Page Links To" and think that it should be a core feature

I think it can be useful sometimes. But not sure that it's very important for me.

another use would be _ if you are going to bridge another software with wordpress like joomla or mediawiki and you and to put a link to bridged software on wordpress menu.

this is possible by adding URL as links but it doesnt appearly prominently on site

  4. Which menu are you talking about here?

You can add external links to both the admin menu (aka grey bar) as well as the menus on the fornt end of your site.

You cannot add them to the sidebar inside the admin, but the other two you can.

    thanks.

I am talking about the horizontal menu in the theme, conventionally used by most of us.

Yes it is there, but it is dependent on theme function.

if theme does not support this functionality, we can't add to horizontal menu, which holds links to all pages.

My point is that one should be able to add external links to horizontal menu in the theme and it should not be dependent of theme itself

  6. Even if the theme doesn't allow for the use of menus (which by the way all themes approved in the theme repository are required to do these days), you can make a child theme and edit it yourself.

Core functionality exists. Theme functionality exists. This must be a part of the theme, since the theme is what displays your content, and as such, is both a theme issue (i.e. not core) AND already implemented :)

If you're having trouble using the feature, please post in the support forums.

  9. 1) When you are on the menu page in WP dashboard, there is a Screen Options at the right top corner. Click it and select the 'Link Target' in 'Advance menu properties'.

    2) Make a menu in WP

    3) Make a 'custom link' in the menu.

    4) Make the link target "_blank"

    5) Done :)
