Wordfence Security is a free enterprise class security plugin that includes a firewall, virus scanning, real-time traffic with geolocation and more.
This software works just as it claims it will. It is unreal the number of wordpress hackers that are out there. My site was getting hammered with multiple invalid logins attempts from all around the globe before I installed this software. Now, the number of attempts have declined and I have peace of mind in knowing they are all being thwarted.
Must admit to having been totally shocked and apalled when I discovered that the company that developed my company's wordpress web site(and hosts the site!) didn't put any security software on it before delivering it to us! WordPress is such an easy application that a lot of amateur web development companies are peddling themselves as "web developers" but not performing to the standard.
Thankfully I stumbled upon Wordfence via Yoast.com video. I made 'admin' an invalid login name and automatically block anyone with one invalid login attempt from getting any more tries (I am the only valid login). Amazing the number of login attacks, logged for me to review. Notice of file changes plus a side-by-side comparison of what was changed is a great help, so far mainly plugin author oversights. Thankfully no emergencies, I DO backup! Very pleased with the free version of Wordfence, very functional! I will upgrade when I make some money ;)
Had my site hacked today. Used diff to compare site files to pristine versions and fix the differences. Now I have WordFence and won't have to do it manually again, and I will be alerted if it happens again, very excited.
Great stuff here. It really works
Have been using the free version for some time. Upgraded to Premium which allows country blocking and scheduled scanning. Registration includes easy-to-use dashboard on the wordfence.com site. Invaluable security tool, money well spent.
In spite of the fact that I am a geek, I felt I had no need of plugins for my blog. Just give me a theme I like and let me write. I hit the support forums over a vastly different issue and chanced upon a support thread mentioning Wordfence. I downloaded it and installed it shortly afterwards. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Wordfence was probably the most useful plugin I could have installed. Its a brand new blog with no users. Less than two hours after installing the plugin, I checked the live traffic. I got 26 hits from from Google, 10 from china, two from Bulgaria, 6 from Taiwan, 1 from Indonesia, and 2 from India and NO human traffic. I've already heard about the brute force attacks where the hackers systematically go through password possibilities using software to generate sequential passwords. Wordfence alerts me to those kinds of attacks as well as others.
Easy to use and set up. Considering the number of blogs I have seen hacked, or with spam in the comments, the freeware version should be automatically included. As it is, it doesn't even show up on the first page of featured plugins her on WordPress. As far as I am concerned, security first, then whistles and bells.
And to the guy above who used a third party script that triggered Wordfence's defenses? Write your own code.
Couldn't ask for anything more
A MUST !!!
Great work |
Wordfence is an awesome security plugin! My name is Sean Johnson and I use it on all of the WordPress websites I own or manage. I just installed it on my main website, http://APlusAutoUnlock.com, that I use for my Emergency Auto Unlock business. I know my website will be protected now from all of the idiots out there that try to hack WordPress websites, and usually succeed unless the website has Wordfence installed on it. I most highly recommend this plugin for your WordPress website.
Thank you for making such a great product available to us and for free.
You guys are the best!
Sincerely, Sean Johnson

I don't think country blocking should be paid for. It's so simple for a developer to create.
