User Role Editor WordPress plugin makes the role capabilities changing easy. You can change any WordPress user role.
This is a very useful plugin and "does what it says on the tin". Great support from Vladimir (on a Sunday) to a problem that was my fault!
The plugin works with the latest core update, handles core plus custom role capability.
I'm testing this for my site. I edited the Contributor role, and although I have no boxes checked for users to be able to edit other users, my Contributor still has access to edit users at equal or lower level.
Otherwise, seems to work fine.
Alternative support for Members plugin for multisite setup!
This plugin was very helpful in allowing me to make sure that my clients had just the right amount of access to their WordPress CMS.
The ads on the role editor suck, but at least the author gives you the option to remove by upgrading to the pro version.
Coming from Drupal where you have almost INFINITE granular control of users, groups and permissions (roles), WP is a bit, ummm, dumbed down, shall we say?
Drupal is made for almost anything from Enterprise sites to full blown pro publishers and so of course this is expected.
Wp, on the other hand is not really meant or designed for multiple users / roles, at least not as of yet anyway.
I have several sites that require me to hand the site off to Advanced Editors / Admins that need some control (particularly of certain plugin capability) but NOT full fledged Admin access.
The standard Editor role was WAY too minimal (could not even SEE the necessary plugin capability, much less edit items).
The full Admin role would have been overkill (and dangerous) for simple Editors to have access to, so something in the middle was required and User Role Editor handled this PERFECTLY~!
Highly recommend you give this a try if you need similar altered / augmented user role capability for any of your sites.
THANKS to the developers. Good job!
Vladimir backs up his plugin! I had a conflict issue that Vladimir investigated fully and resolved -- and in the end it wasn't even caused by his plugin!
Thank you Vladimir!
I have a site where each editor has their own pages. By using this plugin I can restrict what they can do.
Used in conjunction with the sister plugin to view only their own content, I have a workable system where editors cannot edit each others content or mine.
When they login, they only see their own pages and media. Thank you for such an elegant solution.
The best way to protect your clients from themselves. Lock out areas so they do not Accidentally mess things up.
