The Stop Spammers Plugin checks comments and logins using many methods to stop spammers.
I've been using this plugin for several months now, on a large membership site where we had to keep the registration open. As others say, it just works out of the box. It's cut down on 98% of the spam registrations. There are many options but if you accept the defaults, it works just fine. I quickly signed up for the free API keys for Project Honeypot, StopForumSpam, botscout, etc because I like to report the dotty little spammers so the rest of the world can benefit from our data.
The plugin "just works" and that's the best thing about it. No tinkering, no customization, it just does the job. There are small things that could be improved or added to make life even more easy but it is a great tool already as it is. And it keeps getting better.
I had installed other tools like akismet or cleantalk before. I got spams furthermore.
After installing Stop Spammers, no more spamming.
Great job, Keith.
Does the job; WELL!
Have tried them all - this totally blocked registration spam which virtually brought down my server!
Super. Blocks almost all spams on my blog. Plenty of options. Seamlessly integrates to the administration panel.
No end of problems since installing this plugin. Firstly clients are reporting they are getting warning emails about me when I send them emails. Then the plugin locks me out of the site.
Neither robust nor foolproof, I would avoid this plugin.
Here's the message that I see when I login to my WP dashboard:
Stop Spammers has prevented 9269 spammers from registering or leaving comments.
That's nearly 5,000 per month for the 2 months I've had it installed. I'd say that's good evidence that this is a great plugin.
Without this plugin my very low traffic web sites were getting dozens of spam registrations a day. I tried many other plugin solutions and none were effective. The number of various options can be intimidating at first, but once its set up Stop Spammers is positively the bee's knees. In less than a month its stopped over 25K spam registrations. Thanks Keith!
Just beware that you can be locked out of your own website if your ISP assigns you an IP that has already been blacklisted.
If that happens you will need to login to your website via ftp and rename the plugin's php file.
You can also try switching off your modem and switching it back on again.
