"SSH SFTP Updater Support" is the easiest way to keep your WordPress installation up-to-date with SFTP.
I´m using a VPS with about 10 WordPress installs. For security reasons I´ve completely disabled FTP. With this plugin I´m still able to use WordPress auto update features. I also did a quick write up on how I install WP via SSH and as a last step I suggested installing this plugin. Many thanks to the author.
I tried installing the PECL SSH extension on my server, but hit a load of dependency problems so I gave up and tried this instead. It worked first time and I had installed another plugin via SSH from within the WordPress admin within minutes.
Thanks for this powerful plugin, it works like a charm. Nothing to setup, it just works. SFTP/SSH is the only way I can login on one of my sites, and before now I could'nt update everything automatically and some plugins therefore didn't work properly (if they make use of the update functionality).
Excellent plugin :-)
Easy to install.
Adds an option ssh to the settings location where wordpress asks for ftp connection data.
Compared to the popular approach of using pecl ssh2, this is better in terms of security (I don't want to store my key file, temporarily or permanently on my server) while still remains convenient.
Thank you very much, TerraFrost!

I prefer to use SSH because it's more secure. Using FTP sends passwords in cleartext so there's a chance it could be intercepted, leading to your website being hacked.
