Pro purchase - bad support - bad performance
By , for WP 3.8.3

I was a huge fan before Photocrati bought it and re-wrote the core. Now the performance drags down all pages. Even pages that do not have photos, galleries or NextGen widgets show really poor performance.

My client's web host has had to shut down our account for over use of shared resources. When we ran performance analyzer, NextGen libraries accounted for more than 55% of the resource usage on the homepage, where we weren't using anything NextGen.

Now that I've spent money to buy the Pro Version, I'm regretting it. I'm now searching for a really good replacement. Something that works like the original NextGen used to, before all the Photocrati tinkering and excuses.

The De-facto Gallery Plugin for WP
By , for WP 3.9.1

Trust me, if it doesn't work:

  • You're doing it wrong, or
  • There is a fix, or
  • A fix is coming

This is the most widely used gallery plugin, which means it has the widest user base supporting it as well. Totally worth paying for pro.

Never Understood Why This Was So Popular
By , for WP 3.9.1

I think the nine million downloads brag stems from the fact this is one of the oldest gallery plugins for WP and for many years there were no rival plugins that came close to doing what Nextgen could. I've only been using WordPress for six years but I installed NextGen all those years ago and never got it. I found it quite counter-intuitive, despite spending many hours with it. That said, Alex Rabe put a lot of time and effort into creating and developing NextGen and credit where credit's due, he did a valiant effort.

Since that time Nextgen has been superseded by better gallery plugins, whilst WP's legacy image upload system has improved massively too. I suspect that the high number of downloads now are based upon old WP user guides that tell the newbie how every WP user must have NextGen installed. I could be wrong, however I do feel a little uncomfortable with the fact Photocrati appears to be riding on the coat tails of the efforts Alex Rabe put into this plugin. I'm not sure why the developers feel it has to be branded as "NextGen Gallery By Photocrati". When I last tried to use it last year it was a complete mess. Perhaps I should give it another go...

Still, I'm a photographer and my photography website does not use NextGen. It may be the most downloaded gallery plugin, but its a long way from being the most intuitive.

I think this gallery plugin has completely transformed the way my blog does "roundups". Their customer service is excellent! I ran into a bug and they pretty much held my hand through the entire fix. So grateful for their awesome support.

Super plugin - But it does not work any longer
By , for WP 3.9

I would give it 4 of 5 stars if it worked! But there have been problems with redirect for more then 40 days or some! I even bought the plugin.
It does not work anymore with WP 3.9!!

I still hope that they fix it ASAP!! I would not write this if I thought there wasn't a chance!

I would give it 5 out of 5 if they had a more simpel and intuitiv UI with basic functions like - a Upload/create album with a push of a button in the WP editor - nothing else. Why is that so difficul to make? its the admin's job to setup the plugin and the output
