The most popular WordPress gallery plugin and one of the most popular plugins of all time with over 9 million downloads.
I have no idea why, but when i enable this plugin my navigation disappears and many other elements. When I disable the plugin they all come back. Very Strange.
Really easy to use and I found it quite powerful. Sure it's free so expectations must be set accordingly.
I've used it on many of my latest blogs and with good results.
Thanks to the developers!
I was trying to figure out why my site was taking so long to load and it's because of this plugin. When analyzing the network traffic on my site I noticed that there is a dynamic css file (fontawesome) getting loaded on every page regardless of whether or not a Nextgen gallery actually appears on the page. Because the file is dynamically generated it can't be cached so every page view costs at least 2 extra seconds...just for one completely unnecessary file. I haven't found a way to deactivate the fontawesome "feature" so I must now look elsewhere for a tidier, smaller photo gallery plugin.
I've been using NextGen for years. Over the last year, as I have updated my 20+ clients to the latest version of WordPress, I have had nothing but grief from NextGen performance. Especially when it comes to sites with e-commerce modules (WooCommerce, Shopp, etc).
Today I did a simple upgrade, installed a simple theme (no e-commerce), and couldn't get the basic gallery to display properly. Instead, the images open individually in a separate window with no navigational tools, no way to return to the site.
The thing that bugs me the most is that what was once a simple, intuitive plugin has become a bloated, over-designed module which is way beyond what my clients need.
Have I ever paid the NextGen tip jar? No (or maybe a couple of times at best). My bad.
Would I pay for NextGen to work properly? I might have in the beginning if they were like the many plugin producers who kindly suggest an upgrade for pay, and who make clear distinctions between what you get for free vs. money.
But NextGen has lost my trust. It's unlikely that I will be able to talk my clients into paying me to fix something I recommended to them. It will take me hours -- weeks -- months -- to migrate all the images in my clients' galleries to some other display system.
Bottom line: Don't install this plugin. I don't think NextGen is stable enough to know how to respond to the latest WordPress platform. And I can't afford to sit around and wait. As it now stands, 50% of my clients are ready to take a walk.
didnt work for me in 3.8.1
quality of nextgen gallery has reduced with time..
its time for me to move on.
Love this plugin and best of all is the amazing customer service. Prompt, efficient and very helpful to a 'non' techie person. Thanks guys :-)
Fortunately, I tested this on a "test" server before I put it on a Production Server - but here is a comprehensive list of everything that the upgrade broke:
1) The plugin itself is gone. None of the galleries display and the link in dashboard that allows me to manage the galleries is GONE.
2) The plugin.php no longer displays. It is totally blank. Upgrading this plugin now makes it IMPOSSIBLE for me to manage ANY of the site plugins.
3) Help! I guess I need to uninstall, but this is not possible because I can no longer access the plugins.php page - it is completely blank.
Not compatible with older (1.9.x) Nextgen. Very bad job. I uninstall this galery from all sites.
The NextGEN Gallery by photocrati will get better and better and I enjoy it more and more. You are on the right way back to the best gallery plugin. The fifth star will be activated after implementing translation function.
