Membership transforms your WordPress website into a fully functional membership site.
The tutorials go through all the config options, but don't provide any instructions for getting stated and USING the plugin.
I switched instead to wp-members from RocketGeek. It's MUCH easier to get started, and advanced features like filter and action hooks make it very powerful.
I was not impressed. I could not figure out how to set access levels. There was to much set up required. In general I thought that it was a poorly planned plugin
I have had nothing but a horrible experience with WPMU. They make their site look so amazing and promise all of this great support and working plugins, but nothing could be further from the truth.
I installed the premium version of Membership and it was so buggy, the negative rules didn't work as stated in the documentation and it takes a great amount of customizing if you want it to work with other plugins that they offer on their site.
They over promise on their support as well. I have about 3 issues right now that are over a week old that their "support" people have just ignored. It is really outrageous how they market their support and products. I wish the WP community would really call them out more on their shady advertising and customer support.
Nothing but over promises. I am very much considering asking for a refund, but it looks like from other experiences, they don't make it easy.
I would seriously suggest people do a search for "WPMU dev reviews" before deciding to purchase one of their plugins or signing up for a membership. You WILL NOT get what they advertise.
Their plugin spams your administrative area and requires ANOTHER plugin to remove. Unacceptable. Also the plugin itself is poorly organized and wouldn't be worth it anyway.
Is this plugin in beta?! It simply doesn't work properly, at all. All I needed to do was create 2 user types, one with full access and 1 with access to just one page. It can't even perform this function as it confusingly forces your visitors a baked-in user registration screen rather than simply showing a user/pass box. This registration screen can't be modified in any way, so what you see is what you're forced to get. The screen also lists all membership packages, which is something you can't hide and you're forced to get. Really disappointed with this one.
the author must be immature, they still use old paypal api version, there is no way to pay as a guest in payPal express, that is a big problem.
also does not work with custom posts.
This is a plugin which is poorly made for users who want to make a custom registration form. They tell u that a certain plugin is not supported for making a custom registration for with this plugin but there is one out there which u have to pay for. I recommend it for people which want a basic membership system but if you want to go further than that, you should not bother with wordpress.
Their support if awful, I usually have to wait more than 48 hours and if you contact them from their website they ask you to buy their plugin or they will not help.
Our team briefly installed the full version of this on a site before going to s2member, and WPMU had nag notifications everywhere about updating. After uninstalling it leaves behind notifications to download their WPMU Dashboard. Simply unacceptable.
I downloaded it lost time in reading whatever was available and imply didi not work
I bought their support for an other plugin just to find out that the plugin doesnt work and their support is really bad. They answer irrelevant and issues are not solved. Lost of time!
Then I found this!!
Cant believe these cind of services survive nowadays...
I had been using the old paid version of Membership for 1 year, and when we updated WordPress to 3.5 the old version of Membership broke my site. So, it was necessary to get the new version of Membership, so I paid the $19 to update the plugin.
When we updated the plugin, some settings were lost, and we found out that the negative page rules didn't work (it was suggested in WPMUDev's support forums that we just use positive rules instead). After much time, we had the settings in place, but the performance was still wonky, and some rules were not being enforced.
After trying the several suggestions (pretty prompt replies) from WPMUDev, we gave up on Membership and decided to pay $69 for s2Member instead. We set it up super easily the first time, and it's working great! Way easier to use than membership (it seems like the plugin owners pay attention to it more), and there are lots of Payment integration options of we decide to go that route in the future.
So I asked WPMUDev for a refund, but sadly couldn't get one. Not too big a deal, but a little annoying to lose $19 and hours of time because their old plugin broke when I updated to WordPress 3.5. Oh well!
Here is WPMU Dev's response about a refund:
