'You will lose all your customizations' off-putting re. updates (6 posts)

When updating a theme a little notice pops up saying 'Updating this theme will lose any customizations you have made. 'Cancel' to stop, 'OK' to update.' - presumably meaning custom background, custom header etc. But it's very easy to mistake it to mean 'You will lose all your theme options'. Or even, 'Only this theme has this problem.'

Could it be a little less minimalistic? How about, 'All themes when updated require some maintenance. You might have to reset your header image and background but all other settings will be saved.'

No - it's referring to any edits you have made to the theme's files.

How about, 'All themes when updated require some maintenance. You might have to reset your header image and background but all other settings will be saved.'

Because that would be incorrect. Updated themes retain their backgrounds, headers, widgets & menus.

Ah. Well I didn't understand it, so I imagine it's going to confuse a lot of less technically savvy people.

What about, 'If you've altered any of your theme's files then you will lose those changes on updating. You can avoid such problems in future by using a child theme (link)'

Um... that's actually a lot longer than the current message - which is designed to make people stop, think & if necessary, ask about it.

Well ... the idea is to explain.

Experience suggests that users do not read verbose messages.
