btw: the BWP XML sitemap plugin spiders without errors.

Are you on the latest version of WordPress & the Yoast Plugin?

You may want to try turning off the sitemaps feature, save the change, and the re-enable the sitemaps feature. You may also want to check if you still have code from BWP in your .htaccess file.

The sitemap generates (with BWP disabled) and I can manually view it, however if I spider it I get syntax errors. I will try your suggestion, however as the sitemap generates and I can view it in a browser, some malformed XML code is triggering the syntax error.

Ah, my mistake Brandon. I’d disabled all BWP plugins remotely and re-enabled WP SEO expecting the sitemap to function as it was previously enabled based on the first site I tested. This is not the case. I had to manually visit the other sites and click the XML button to get the sitemap to regenerate (or clear any redirects).

Oh, and on a couple of sites I had to (as you suggested) disable and re-enable the sitemap feature in WPSEO. htaccess was clear of any redirects, possibly some cached code / redirects. That fixed it. Thank you for that push.

All fixed and thanks again Brandon.
