   I have avatars allowed through admin > settings > discussion and the default avatar shows up for all posts, but there's nowhere in any user profile to select a custom avatar? Where do I go to do that? Do I need a plugin just to allow custom avatars?

   WordPress uses Gravatars (Globally Recognized Avatars). Go to http://gravatar.com and create your avatar there. Then, everywhere on the web that uses gravatars will show yours when you post there. Even this very forum. One avatar for everywhere.

   Just make sure you use the same email address, since gravatars are tied to the email address.
