   How can I make my writers only able to save draft or awaiting moderation would work as well, because I want to go through the posts before I let them post them.

   So I want the admin login to review and accept the post before it is published to the site, and writer should not be able to just post it. However am I just using wrong role?

   Set the role for your users to contributers.

   Administration > Users > Authors & Users

   Have you tried setting your writers up as Contributors?
