I HAD a capability in the post manage write/edit mode where i had two tabs that offered two options = normal/code.
in code tab = when i copied text with links the links code was embedded = live links when i published.
i went through my plugins and some of the admin options and can't seem to get this capability back.

Did you do anything like upgrade or add a plugin before it stopped working?

i upgraded Simple Forum which is causing some admin issues. like i see my tags in posts and in the tag cloud but in admin i get 404 messages on the tags. so admittedly my admin is a bit quirky at the moment. however, i had this issue before the SF upgrade.
the visual/code tab option = is that a standard within wordpress or a plug option?

It is standard in all recent version as far as I know. Could you temporarily deactivate SF and see if your tabs reappear?

i have gone through the process of deactivating most but not all plugins. i did deactivate simple forum, simple tagging, simple tag-cloud widget. i will try and do the rest when in the mood ;-)
still get 404 when in tag-admin mode though they work ok on site.

Also check your Users/Profile settings and make sure that the Use the visual editor when writing box is checked off.

hmmm. i forgot about this issue and just returned to say i found the answer just now = admin > user > profile ;-)
this is resolved...
