wp.tutsplus - WordPress Development and Deployment With MAMP, Git and Dropbox (7 posts)

I'm new to WordPress and CMS in general. I have been at this for weeks now, trying to get up and running so I can start designing with WP. Did my own site (existing) and built a child theme to match. All was well until I tried to make it go live then everything went to hell. (following Lynda.com tutorials re: importing/exporting and backing up/restoring database). I haven't been able to get it to work. Tried to bring in content from that installation to clean installs, but the links to the media were broken. So I'm back to an empty page with no content except the child theme. http://donnagreenedesign.com
Then I found the http://wp.tutsplus.com/ tutorial http://wp.tutsplus.com/tutorials/hosting/wordpress-development-and-deployment-with-mamp-git-and-dropbox/ which I found exciting, since I'd like to design multiple sites and be able to access them on my desktop and my laptop. I followed it to a tee, or so I thought, but can't get the http://www.site.dev to come up... "Sorry, the website http://www.site.dev cannot be found"
I'm no code wizard but figured out how to use Terminal (yes, for the first time :) ), etc. to follow the tutorial. I think it may be down to something wrong with the httpd.conf file, since those instructions were a little vague for a newbie like me. Everything else was well explained.
So once again, I'm stuck and frustrated. Any help would be very gratefully appreciated.
    Thank you!

We really can't endorse any external tutorials. Or help with them. All I can suggest is that you review Moving_WordPress.

Thanks for your input, esmi. One thing I have confusion about is the php in localhost as opposed to the php on the server, separate databases and all. I'll try using the above link. Hopefully I haven't screwed everything up too much...

What do you mean by "the php in localhost as opposed to the php on the server"?

The host server has different username/password and database and they each have a different php set up. I thought I was supposed to create a database on the host server to house the wp site. No?

Yes. Have you reviewed Moving_WordPress? It does cover all of this.
