wpcf7_form_action_url success message not showing

    I am using the hook ‘wpcf7_form_action_url’ to send the form data to another server for processing.
    This works perfectly and the data sent no problems. But the form just sits waiting for a response. not displaying a error or success message.
    What response does the server need to return to the page to get a success message displayed?
    There are other forms on the site which are not using the hook and work perfect.
