wp_list_pages() class not totally functioning?

I know how to use wp_list_pages, etc and to style the links via the page_item and current_page_item classes. Normally, all works as expected.

However, I am having a bit of trouble with my first WP2.3 site where the home page doesn’t trigger the current_page_item highlighting in the footer. It’s working everywhere else (in the same list in the footer) just not for the home page, which is a static page set to be the starting page in the admin options.
