What happened to the formatting buttons in the 'visual' text editor?
How are novice users like me supposed to create rich posts?
I've got only buttons to insert various media...
That's really irritating!
I really want to revert to 2.7

All of the Visual Editor's formatting buttons are still available in WP 2.8 but it would seem that something is interfering with their display in your case. Try deactivating all plugins and check to see if this resolves the problem. If it does, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
