Originally I thought something was wrong with my wordpress install or environment since it is behind a proxy and firewall. I kept getting the error "Could not open socket" when clicking "Post Comment". I was trying some other plugins for anti-spam in the comments and those seemed to have problems too. I changed the theme from the default wordpress 3 theme and they started working. I started to go through the various themes and in some it works and in some it doesn't. Doesn't work in the default WP theme, does work in Arras.

I should clarify, I was trying the plugins one at a time and not all at once. For instance, the WP Captcha Free plugin also did not work.

Apparently the issue is somehow related to SSL. I have enabled SSL for Login/Admin via the define('FORCE_SSL_ADMIN', true); directive in wp-config.php. I think some plugins that support his will change the action on the commentform to https while others will keep it http. The ones that keep it http work. Not sure what to do about it. I don't want to turn off my SSL for login/admin work.
I'm using Mystique. I'll give it a try. I hate getting these bot registrations.
