   I'm new to wordpress. I have created a few blogs on WP but is the downloadable application just for those who are experienced in enhancing the blog? What is the actual point of installation?

   The installation is for people who are hosting their WP blogs on other sites like GoDaddy.

   BTW, is it possible to use the plugins using wordpress as my main blog site?

   If you're using WordPress.com, plugins aren't available. If you have a self-hosted WordPress site (with a web host like BlueHost, Go Daddy, Host Gator, etc), then you can use plugins.
