Support » Networking WordPress » WP installation in subfolder – permalinks not working

    Hi,

I have installed wordpress 3.0.1 in a subfolder called /blog/ in my root directory, which hosts an online shop.

It all looks fine, however, I have a problem with the links, which redirect back to the main website, without the /blog/ in the url. I have tried to use custom structure permalinks (/blog/%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%/) but when doing this I get a 404 error in the blog, rather than the posts. I have an .htaccess file on the root directory that when I try to change it affects the site in the root directory. From what I have read, I think I need a separate .htaccess file in the /blog/ subfolder, but I havent managed to get it to work.
I hope it makes sense and any help will be much appreciated.

    Many thanks in advance

No you do not. Nor do you need to create a physical blog folder. The folders are virtual.

What’s in your .htaccess in root?

Hi ipstenu, thank you for your reply.

It was already there from the zencart installation in the root folder.
Do you want me to paste the whole contents of the file?

Wait … I misread this… Sorry. You have WordPress in the /blog/ folder then yes, you DO need a .htaccess in /blog/ – What’s THAT .htaccess?

Are you running multisite from there? Because if so, all your URLs will have /blog/ in them, just as an FYI. And you can ONLY use subfolder multisite.

The .htaccess on the root folder is from – i believe – the zencart installation in the root directory.

I have placed a new htaccess in the /blog/ directory, but, what do i need to put in it to get it to work?

    Many thanks

Are you running multisite and, if so, please confirm you set up your install for subfolders. I’m asking for a reason 🙂 The answers are different, and I’m not sure you are just yet.

There is a site root folder, the blog is installed on the /blog/ subfolder.

the main site is on http://www.jamesfox.ie and the blog on http://www.jamesfox.ie/blog

Erm, it was as easy as changing the home url in the settings lol… Sorry for troubling you with my siliness 🙂

Still doesn’t sound like a MultiSite install, BTW 🙂 In multisite, you CANNOT do the ‘act as in root’ trick.

MultiSite means you’re using ONE WordPress install to power a network of sites (i.e. multiple sites – MultiSite).
