   I'd like to design my own wordpress theme, but don't want to install WP on a remote server and deal with the FTP upload of changes, etc.

   I figure I'm going to need:
   1. web server software
   2. sql server software
   3. php software

   Can anyone point me in the direction of what I need on a Windows XP machine to essentially do my work as http://localhost/ instead?

   Try xampp http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html

   The usual solution is XAMPP, which is an all-in package. I prefer this one that Podz suggests:

   http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/usb/

   It doesn't have to go on a memory stick - it's just as happy on a hard drive. No real installation, works nicely.

   (Just noticed there are two on offer now - I use the first one, WOS.)
