I have a shared host. I made a new subdomain ‘test’
    It lives in www/test
I install WP using the install script

I copy all the files from my old install to www/test
    I import my old DB
I search/replace my DB to update urls to test.site.com

test.site.com now works perfectly, all links images work fine
When I go to test.site.com/wp-admin, it redirects me to
    test.site.com/test/wp-admin
    and it doesn’t work

What is doing this? How does it know it’s in a subdomain?

  • Where is WordPress installed? At test.site.com or at test.site.com/test ?

This is a shared host, so the base

    www = site.com
    www/test = test.site.com
    site.com/test = test.site.com

wp is installed in www/test ie test.site.com

Now I’ve got it so that if it redirects me to
    test.site.com/test/wp-admin
    and I enter test.site.com/wp-admin again
    sometimes it works.

Once I’m in dashboard all links work in test.site.com/wp-admin/etc

test.site.com now works perfectly, all links images work fine

    sometimes it works.

These observations show that WordPress has been installed correctly and it works fine. The second statement that it works sometimes has to do something to do with your sever settings/problems.

You need to ask your hosts about it.
