I've just lost the images on my site stored in wp-images. I think it is because I fiddled with the CHMOD earlier for that folder because I was hoping to enable upload via the wordpress interface. Can you please tell me what I need to do to restore the images, which are still in the correct file on the server but are not showing up when my page charges? I note that the command I use in cute ftp to designate a CHMOD value for the folder does not apply to all the images within it automatically.

unless you think something else could be the cause of this?
Try 777 for the folder. If that works, try 766 then 755.
Folder permissions don't usually affect contents perms in my experince.. but there are a lot of servers out there.

I had to go with option one to get it to work. I don't think that was how it was set before so I'm a bit puzzled. 766 and 755 caused problems again.
Does that mean that other people can fiddle with the contents of my images directory ? Or are the individual files governed by their own CHMOD values?
add a very limitating htaccess, as the upload is a http based one, it should keep people out of the folder while serving images and accepting upload.
I don't understand this, so could someone enlighten me ?
Let's say I have a folder of images too, and it's set to 777.
All it contains is images.
And let's say I have a random 16 character ftp password.
How would someone manage to upload anything ?
I know once it's there that executing it is another issue...
And if I needed that folder to remain 777, what exactly would I put into a .htaccess to protect that folder ?
I understood "can fiddle" also in the idea can look at it as they wish... Remember that english is not my main language, so I certainly misunderstood the guy there... sowwy -_-
No, that's okay !
I always put an index.html in all my folders. It usually just says something like "No peeking thanks!", but I often see people here advising against 777 - hence my question :)
How is CHMOD 755 causing problems? That seems to be the recommendation around these parts. I'm having no trouble with it.

In 755 none of the images stored in my images folder were visible on my site. The banner was blank and the other images didn't show up.
other folders on my site are 766 or 755 and working fine.
I'm not going to worry about it, as long as it is working.

My attitude too :)
