WP Gallery Column Problem

    Hello.
    I am fairly new to WordPress but now I have a problem.
    When I use the built in WP-Gallery thing I can upload some pictures. When I try to display them in columns more than three (wich seems to be built into media.php) I can only see this nmuber of columns in the post-site. When opening the Homepage it switches back to 3 columns.
    This seems to be a older problem, so has someone found a solution yet?
    thanks.
    I have tried some hacks into media.php, but then only the default number of columns changes.
