Environment: Bluehost with add-on subdomains. Up to this past week we were fine, and then I added another add-on. Used Simplescript WordPress plugin on Bluehost to set up the wp site for me.

    Questions first:
    1. Can I associate an older sql database with a new installation?
    2. Is there any reason a plugin would create it’s own database on my server?
    3. I used Simplescript WordPress to install wp into a totally different subdomain – brushwiththesea.com. Could this be related? The timing is close and I’m grasping.

    Backstory:
This is odd. I’ll try to explain logically.
My (add-on subdomain) website, http://www.wakeforestareaartists.com is kaput mortem. So I log into my server cpanel, and I find that the wp_content folder for this domain has nothing in it but an error log. The original sql database looks okay, but I notice I have some extra databases. Poking around finds a second database that has tables in it that match some plugins I had added. This may be okay, as the website was running just fine 2 weeks ago.

In the interest of just getting up and running, I decided to do a clean install of WordPress manually, which I have done. I edited wp_config.php to match the info for my main database, but now I’m receiving the dreaded 404 cannot connect to the database error when I try to finish up my install: http://wakeforestareaartists.com/wp-admin/install.php

I hate to destroy my perfectly good database. Any ideas? Thanks! Kittie Rue

    1. Yes – providing you use a different table prefix if the db already contains one set of WP tables.

    2. I’d say that’s highly unlikely.

    3. No.

I fixed this problem by going into my sql dbase manager and deleting all instances of the user. I then recreated the user, updated the passcode, and updated wp_config.php to the new password.

Got to the admin screen. Now if I can remember where I left off…..
